Announcement of the

Sustainable forest management
in the northern boreal zone
Methods to monitor sustainable
forestry in Finland

Multiple use of forests and forestry as a special feature of the northern forestry, e.g. reindeer husbandry and tourism

The forestry in northern Scandinavia is characterised by, e.g. a short growing period, cold winters and a humid climate. Due to the warm Atlantic Golf Stream, this region is the northernmost forest growing area in the world. In spite of the northern location the forestry is intensive. Forestry is an important industrial sector for the regional economy in Lapland.

Almost all of Lapland is reindeer husbandry area, where the reindeers graze freely in the forests and the mountains. Tourism is also very important for the employment and economy of Lapland. Large conservation areas are located in northern Finland. Northernmost Lapland is the homeland of the Sami people.
