Biodiversity of Boreal Nature and its Conservation
II International Symposium of the Nature Reserve Friendship

Kuhmo, Finland and Kostamus, Russia
16 - 19 October, 2000

Objectives:
The Research Centre of Friendship Park, Natural Heritage Services of Pohjanmaa-Kainuu Region of the Forest and Park Service and Kostamus State Nature Reserve will arrange a symposium covering research, nature conservation awareness, assessment of the state of nature conservation and ecotourism with support from the Finnish Ministry of the Environment.

Special emphasis is directed on biodiversity of forests, mires and watercourses in the boreal coniferous zone in different biogeographical scales, and its conservation, as well as land use effects. Scientists, nature conservation authorities and organisations are cordially invited to participate the symposium to present lectures and posters on the above mentioned topics. The language in the scientific sessions of the symposium is English. In other sessions, English-Russian interpretation is available, if needed.

Travel and accommodation:
The symposium will start and end in Kuhmo, a small town surrounded by taiga nature in central eastern Finland. For more background information and links see the web site of the workshop on disturbance dynamics in boreal forests arranged in Kuhmo in August, 2000 by the University of Helsinki, in the address http://honeybee.helsinki.fi/dist2000/.

To reach Kuhmo conveniently, you first take a plane or train to Kajaani or Kostamus, and then a bus to Kuhmo. The symposium will be mainly held at Kuhmo Arts Centre (Kuhmo-talo). A part of the sessions will be arranged in Kostamus, as well as a short excursion in the vast old-growth forests of Russian Karelia. There will be no registration fee, and accommodation at low costs is available in nearby hotels and hostels (approximately 120-200 FIM in double rooms per night). For a limited number of participants, financial support is available to cover a part of the traveling and accommodation expenses. The organisers will also help in arranging visas to cross the Finnish-Russian border.
